The governments of Ontario and Canada have announced a combined $572 million investment in Hamilton through the Development Charge Reduction Program (DCRP). The funding is tied to the City’s commitment to eliminate residential development charges for three years, helping reduce the cost of building new homes and encouraging new housing construction.

According to the announcement, removing development charges could lower the cost of a new home in Hamilton by up to $100,000, while expanded HST relief could provide additional savings for homebuyers. The City estimates these measures, combined with major infrastructure investments, could help unlock more than 31,000 new homes.

Funding will support key housing-enabling infrastructure projects across Hamilton, including improvements to Barton Street, Rymal Road, Garner Road, Lewis Road, and upgrades to the Woodward water and wastewater treatment plant and Greenhill Water Pumping Station.

The investment represents one of the largest infrastructure commitments in Hamilton’s history and is intended to support housing growth, create jobs, and improve the transportation and servicing infrastructure needed for future development.
