The Construction Sector has traditionally experienced high rates of workplace injuries and fatalities. That's why Premier Wynne mandated her Minister Labour, Kevin Flynn, to develop a construction action plan to improve the industry's health and safety performance. The Minister delegated the development of the plan to his Chief Prevention Officer and recently struck a new advisory group of experts to provide him with advice in regard to improving the health and well-being of workers in the province's construction sector.
The industry advisory group will be responsible for continued development and implementation of the Construction Health and Safety Action Plan. Led by the province's Chief of Prevention Officer, the group will assist the ministry with:
working with other enforcement authorities and municipalities
working with youth to build a culture of health and safety
increasing commitment to health and safety in construction workplaces
ensuring legislation and regulations are understood by the construction sector
enhancing training in the sector
ensuring effective social outreach strategies
The Chief Prevention Officer has consulted with stakeholders on the development of the plan and has provided updates from time to time on its status. It appears from the duties and responsibilities listed above that the role of the Advisory group will be to provide advice with regard to implementation of the construction action plan.
