Business Succession Planning

In time, the ownership of all companies must change hands unless the current owner plans to liquidate their assets and go out of business. While approximately 30% of construction businesses are eventually liquidated, it is the least desirable choice for most owners - liquidation is usually a sign that no exit plan exists.

Succession planning is an essential part of doing business, no matter how certain your future appears. It's easy to put off planning when everything seems to be going so well, right? Wrong. Now is the time to begin succession planning. The importance of having an exit strategy for owners has become an immediate concern as the large majority of construction business owners are approaching retirement age. Without a strong succession-planning program, companies are not prepared to fill openings created by retirements or unexpected departures, nor are they able to meet demands for additional corporate leaders resulting from growth.

During this session you will hear from three panelists and the strategies they themselves used to transfer ownership, management and leadership within their companies as well as a senior tax manager with helpful tips and key tax implications.

Panelist include Domenic Mattina, Mattina Mechanical Ltd.; Blair Hubber, Lancaster Group Inc.; Don Gosen, Gosen Electric Ltd.; Justin Mastrangelo, BDO Canada LLP.

Register for this informative and interactive session, moderated by Scott Jarrett from BDO Canada LLP.

Date: Thursday, November 13, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Construction House. Members receive a discounted rate of $25 per person (plus tax).

AODA Deadlines - Are you Ready?

Do you know your obligations under the AODA?  As of January 1, 2012 the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requires all organizations to become compliant with this legislation.

The AODA Customer Service Standard is much more than providing adequate facility features such as automatic doors and ramps. It's about understanding the different needs that persons with disabilities may have and interacting with them in a way that you will help them the most.

As a follow up to the AODA session that the HHCA had in October, here are past compliance deadlines based on large and small businesses.
